Math 124 Fall 2017 Section KAUST

Calculus with Analytic Geometry I

About this course

This course is designed to introduce you to differential calculus. We will learn about the derivative, it's theory and how to compute it, and then will apply it to a wide variety of problem solving applications.

Unlike last quarter, there isn't a lot of disjoint material to study. In fact, we will only focus on one new tool, the derivative. It is often a difficult concept to understand the theory of, and so if you have not seen it before it may take some getting used to. That's what homework is for, and also that's what I am here for, please ask me questions and come to office hours, and we can help use the fundamentals developed last quarter to have some real fun!

Announcements

Grading Scheme

Homework: 15%
Quizzes: 15%
Midterm Exams (2): 20% each
Final Exam: 30%

Grades are curved, so that your course grade will reflect your performance relative to the rest of the class rather than a fixed percentage scheme. Historically, the median grade in Math 124 is in the range of 2.5-3.0, although KAUST tends to perform relatively higher. If you get at least 95% overall, you will receive a 4.0. If you get at least 70% overall, you will receive at least a 2.0.

A grade of 2.0 or better in Math 124 is required to move on to Math 125. You will probably need to average about 70% or better on exams and quizzes to acheive this.
